Here we examine what the thyroid is and why an underactive thyrod can cause so many problems with regards to weight management.
This small butterfly shaped gland responsible for underactive thyroid is found at the base of the throat where it secretes hormones that help to regulate heart rate, temperature and metabolism. It is because of the last function that an underactive thyroid, otherwise known as hypothyroidism, can lead to weight problems.
The condition is far more common in women than men. When you have an underactive thyroid, it can slow down your metabolic rate meaning the speed at which your body is able to convert food into energy and burn up calories.
Symptoms include lack of concentration, exhaustion, heavy periods, dry skin, or swelling around the face and eyes. If you suspect that you are suffering from an under active thyroid, you should consult your doctor. Many cases of hypothyroidism are thought to go undetected because the symptoms are associated with many other conditions including ageing. With treatment, the condition is not serious as synthetic versions of the hormone you need can be taken in the form of tablets to restore correct levels.
While this condition may slow your metabolic rate, it should not cause you to gain a large amount of weight. With treatment you can lead a perfectly normal life. As long as you exercise and eat a healthy balanced diet, you should be able to keep slim. Exercise is particularly important for increasing your metabolic rate. As is eating low in fat foods low that promote hormone production such as oily fish, fruit and nuts. Things to avoid include alcohol, soya beans and cabbage as this may further prevent the gland from functioning properly.
